I admit it. I love jewelry and really don’t feel properly dressed without a generous amount of it as part of my ensemble. In fact, in a recent event where there was an opportunity to roast me, one of my favorite lines was this one, “Millie, Saturn called. It wants its rings back.”

That said. I also love the enabling technology that is emerging into a new category of wearables. Yet to date, my problem has been that it’s just not very shiny, or appealing to me as a fashion statement. I even ordered a black jawbone, but I am having a hard time thinking about putting it on my wrist all the time. I love the idea. But a black band just doesn’t compliment my other bangles very well. Sigh.

Enter Ringly and MEMI. Two companies set to design technology to look more like jewelry, and leading a movement to say that for women to move toward wearable technology as a mainstream choice, perhaps we should make it prettier. Good idea.

Some of the other technology companies that market wearables, disagree and talk about providing gender-neutral devices with choices of color, etc. But for me, it’s still not the same. And if you’ve been to a women’s fashion site on-line or shopped your favorite department store during this holiday season, it is clear that beautiful design drives sales exponentially. And the real estate devoted to selling women’s fashion as opposed to men, well figuring out there is opportunity is a no brainer.

Here’s an article chronicling this trend for Fast Company with pictures of some of the prototypes. I think I want the silver bangle on the right.
