Today, with a more than half of all Americans using a smartphone, it’s easier than ever to work on-the-go right from the palm of your hand. Long gone are the days where having a 2-hour flight delay affords you the opportunity to “disconnect.”

As a communications professional, the one tool I rely on the most is my mobile phone. It’s with me all the time and I’m constantly checking in to make sure I’m keeping up with our clients. It would be hard to argue that anyone in the communications business could get by without a mobile phone.

Nevertheless, I’m continually amazed by the apps available today to help keep us productive, connected and informed. So I thought I’d share some of my favorites and why.

PULSE

This is a great app for those who have to stay “in the know” about what’s going on in the communications industry and the world around you. Pulse lets you manage the news and content you need or want. And, it’s pretty easy to use! While I also have individual news apps, which I also use, Pulse is just a handy way to keep news content together.

ESPN SPORTSCENTER

I know, lame. But as an avid sports fan, I love this app. It allows you to set up alerts based on your favorite teams as well as give you top line information on what’s going on with any sport. Again, I have individual apps, but when I travel I like to have my information easily accessible and ESPN gives me a way to look at all sports.

DROPBOX

Easy access to files where ever you are. Period.

DOCUMENTS

Since I receive many documents to review, this app allows you to edit from your phone or iPad, which is easier sometimes than getting the laptop out. Documents allows you to manage all your files, create and edit documents, create spreadsheets. It’s compatible with Dropbox and it can import files from email.

AROUNDME

If you travel, this is a great app. It gives you information about where you are in a very easy to view format. AroundMe segments the information out by restaurant, gas station, etc. Very cool and helpful.

FLASHLIGHT

OK, so this really isn’t something that’s going to help you out for work, but if the lights go out, FlashLight helps you find your way! I thought this would be an app that I rarely use and I’ve found myself using it at least once a week.

MOBILE BANKING

OK, so I’m not going to give you my bank, but most banks today have an app. This makes it easy to pay bills, review account info from the palm of your hand!

SOAP.COM

I heard about this site from a colleague and now I love it and have downloaded the app. Soap.com allows you to purchase all your household essentials and have them delivered directly to your front door. Anything, from cereal to laundry detergent can be found. They also have a cool sister site called wag.com for man’s best friend.

So there you have it! My “go to” apps.
