The roots of Muhabura University stretch back to 2002 with the development of Bridge2Rwanda, a nonprofit agency developed by Dale Dawson of Little Rock, AR and Anglican Bishop John Rucyahana of Rwanda. Motivated by Jesus’ call to love and serve one another, Bridge2Rwanda’s mission is to create a new generation of well-educated, entrepreneurial servant leaders in Rwanda and beyond.
Over the past seven years, Bridge2Rwanda has partnered with Rwanda’s leaders to mobilize individuals and organizations to focus on four significant projects:
- Sonrise School – One of Rwanda’s top performing boarding schools for primary and secondary students; half of the students are orphans
- Presidential Scholars Program – Four-year scholarships for Rwanda’s top high school graduates to attend U.S. colleges and universities
- Urewego Opportunity Bank – Rwanda’s largest full-service micro-finance bank for the poor
- Borrowed Talent – Mobilizing Americans to move to Rwanda to help Rwandans “do it for themselves”
The development of Muhabura University is Bridge2Rwanda’s next big project. It is being established to educate and train the professional talent that Rwanda needs to achieve its Vision 2020 goals and to develop servant leaders with strong character.
Muhabura University is currently under construction and entered its “Pre-Opening” phase in August 2009. The doors are projected to open for students in August 2010, and to be at full capacity with 1200 students by August 2015.
